Hebrews 7:11-28
Wednesday Oct 05, 2016
Wednesday Oct 05, 2016
In Hebrews 7:11-28 we discuss Christ’s High Priesthood and why it takes precedence over the Aaronic priesthood. We learn that a new priesthood requires that a new covenant (or system of laws) is necessary. This new covenant is a will. A will can only be enacted after the writer has died. Then it is up to the executor of the will to fulfill the provisions of the will and the inheritance. This executor can also be considered the guarantor and mediator of any disputes of this will.
Jesus is the writer of the will and upon His resurrection, he also functions as the executor, guarantor and finally the mediator of his last will and testament. Which is what the New Testament portion of the Bible is all about!
This podcast is a live recording of a non-denominational Bible study led by Dr. Val. Some 20-25 men meet each week at 6:30 AM for an hour. They study and discuss the passage. Questions are encouraged and often lead to rabbit trails that help us discover and process additional Biblical truths.

In Hebrews 7:1-10 we again see “inclusio” or bookends (an ancient way of pointing out that everything between the bookends is one thought and significant). Additionally, we encounter a chiasm. Chiasms are a literary technique used by writers of old to further define important information the reader needed to know. This is done by listing items in a specific order and then reversing this order at the end of the passage. The important information is found in the center of the chiasm. This passage points out that since Jesus High Priesthood similar to Melchizedek and therefore the concept of a tithe continues to be important today.

In this podcast we finish Hebrews 6:9-20. We do a quick wrap up of the first eight verses of chapter six and plough new ground. Good works are a proof of our salvation – not the other way around. We can be assured of the security of our salvation based on two important points: God’s promise and God’s oath. If His promise wasn’t good enough, God proceeds to take an oath swearing His Word is true!
A final thought at the end of the chapter is the “inclusio” or bookends (an ancient way of pointing out that everything between the bookends is one thought and significant). The issue of maturity is the overarching theme of this passage. You see this from Hebrews 5:10 & 6:20.

We finish our look at perhaps the most difficult passage to understand in all of Scripture Hebrews 6:1-8. Having once gained salvation (a right relationship with God) was it possible to lose it? If we can lose it can we gain it back? If we can never lose our salvation then why discuss the possibility of its loss? These are some of the questions we will address in this podcast.

We also begin to look at perhaps the most difficult passage to understand in all of Scripture, Hebrews 6:1-8. This will be a challenging study!
